Products and configurations to compare
Metal detector bungee support
Cheap weight relief.
Best when: one shoulder/arm fatigues late in hunts
Watch for: still loads one side unless anchored well
Full detector harness
Spreads load across torso.
Best when: large coils or PI machines
Watch for: more straps and heat
Detector sling / hip stick
Compact alternative.
Best when: you want quick on/off support
Watch for: fit and attachment vary
Support changes swing mechanics
Set tension so the coil still tracks the ground naturally.
Too much lift is counterproductive
The harness should unload weight, not fight downward control.
Large coils magnify nose-heaviness
Support becomes more valuable as diameter increases.
Harnesses trap heat
Minimal systems can be preferable in hot climates.
Practice target recovery while connected
The best setup unclips easily when kneeling.
Protection should not trap dirt or moisture
Skidplates, screen films and neoprene control covers are cheap compared with detector repairs, but they need maintenance. Sand between a coil cover and coil can grind away at the plastic; a wet control-box cover can hold moisture against buttons and ports. Remove, rinse and dry protective pieces periodically.
Cases solve transportation, not field use. A hard case protects during vehicle travel; a soft detector bag is lighter for ordinary storage. Break the shaft down only as much as the manufacturer intended and avoid putting pressure on coil ears or cable connectors.
Protectors are consumables
Replace a deeply gouged skidplate or cloudy screen protector rather than treating it as permanent equipment. Its job is to absorb wear before the expensive part does.
Before checkout
- Accessory is compatible with the exact detector model
- Coil connector and firmware support are confirmed
- Waterproof rating matches the actual depth/use
- Wireless audio is low-latency enough for detecting
- Digging tool matches turf, field or beach conditions
- Finds pouch separates sharp trash from keepers
- Recovery tools have holsters or lanyards
- Saltwater gear can be rinsed and dried
- Added weight remains comfortable for multi-hour hunts
- The purchase solves a repeated field problem rather than duplicating existing gear
Buy the accessory that fixes the next hunt
Metal detecting gear is easy to overbuy because almost every accessory is cheaper than the detector. Before ordering, name the field problem in one sentence: “I lose targets in park trash,” “my scoop is exhausting in wet sand,” “my headphone cable snags,” or “the M15 makes my arm tired.” If the product does not fix that sentence directly, leave it in the cart.
Compatibility is the second filter. Detector families use model-specific coils, audio systems and waterproof connectors. Search by exact model and part family, not just brand. A Minelab accessory can still be wrong for another Minelab platform.
First-hunt test
Use new gear on a familiar site. Compare recovery speed, swing fatigue or audio timing against your old setup. Change one thing at a time so you know whether the new coil, headphones or harness actually helped. For beach gear, rinse and inspect it immediately after the first saltwater session to find corrosion-prone fasteners while the return window is still open.
The best accessories disappear into the routine. The target, site and permission should remain the interesting part.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a harness for Equinox 900?
Usually not with stock coils unless personal comfort requires it.
What about M15?
A larger coil can make support more worthwhile.
Harness or counterweight?
Harness reduces carried load; counterweight improves balance but adds total mass.
Can it restrict digging?
Poorly adjusted systems can; quick-release matters.
